Israel continued to press the United Nations today in an effort to force Egypt to release the 70-ton fishing trawler, Doron, and its crew of six seized September 25 by the Egyptian coast guard in the Mediterranean.
For the second successive day, leaders of the Israel delegation here conferred with Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold on the problem. Abba S. Fban, chairman of the Israel delegation, accompanied by deputy chairman Mordecai Kidron, visited Mr. Hammarskjold this morning. They were understood to have told the UN chief that, unless Israel obtained satisfaction in regard to the seizure, it would take the issue to the Security Council.
Mr. Hammarskjold was understood to have promised again to do everything in his power to get at least some information about where the sailors were being held and about their treatment, as well as about the ship and its costly deep-sea fishing equipment. Mr. Hammarskjold reportedly asked Mr. Eban to delay action on a request for a Security Council meeting in the hope that some positive developments might be achieved.
Dr. Yusuf Haikal of Jordan saw Mr. Hammarskjold this morning just before Mr. Eban’s visit and was understood to have discussed his government’s insistence that Israel halt its afforestation work in the Jerusalem area and dismantle that portion of the project which has already been completed. Dr. Haikal, who saw Mr. Hammarskjold over the same issue a week ago, and was talked out of resort to the Security Council at that time has presumably received new instructions from his government.
