Israel abstained today in the voting for a member of the board of governors on the organization to promote the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes which is being set up at the international conference here. The Egyptian delegate was elected by a vote of 42 of a possible 48.

When Israel was assigned to the Middle East-North Africa bloc which would be represented on the international board by its own governor, the Israeli delegate, Prof Ernst Bergmann, protested that under this classification system Israel’s interests would never be represented by a governor from an Arab state. His protests were unheeded so Prof. Bergmann, chairman of Israel’s Atomic Energy Commission, abstained.
