The Hebrew Theological College of Chicago plans to establish a four-year college of religious studies for women modelled on the Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women, Rabbi Oscar Z. Fasman, president of the Chicago school, announced here today at the 10th annual midwinter conference of the Rabbinical Council of America, representative body of 750 Orthodox rabbis.
Dr. Fasman, who reported that in recent years Orthodox Judaismhad opened 227 Hebrew all-day schools, told the parley that “Orthodox Judaism is capable of coping with all the varied problems and challenges of this atomic age. It must play a more vigorous role in the search for solutions to the grave issues confronting the democratic world,” He asserted that “Orthodoxy is no longer living in an era of defensive apology, but is now assuming an aggressive position in the areas of culture, philanthropy, civic endeavors and education.”
