The danger to Israel in the Egyptian-Syrian national merger is clearly visible to Turkish political circles and they freely express concern over the possibility of early conflict.

The newspaper Dunya, official organ of the Republican Peoples Party, the major opposition party, called today upon the West to take immediate measures to protect Israel because the interests of both the non-Communist powers and “Israel, the Wests only reliable ally in the Middle East, ” were endangered by the formation of the Nasser-led “United Arab Republic.” Though the newspaper granted the Israel army was “strong enough, ” it suggested that in the new situation the army might not be able alone to guarantee Israel’s security.
