A stern warning to the United Arab Republic against any attempt to present the world with a fait accompli by annexing the Gaza Strip was voiced today on Israel’s Arab-language radio broadcast.
Answering a query from an Israeli Arab listener, the announcer on the official station said that the Israeli army handed over the Gaza Strip to the United Nations Emergency Force when it pulled out, not to Egypt. If President Nasser is seriously considering a Gaza coup, the announcer continued, he could easily have a repeat performance of his “glorious victory–the retreat from Gaza.”
On the other hand, it was indicated here today that nothing has actually happened in relation to the United Arab Republic’s plans to annex the Gaza Strip which would require action by the Israel Army. Observers believe that there is no direct danger to Israel in such plans, but rather to the Iraq-Jordan federation. President Nasser’s aim, apparently, is the creation of a local government in Gaza to strengthen anti-government forces among the Palestine Arab refugees in Jordan.
