Legal circles in the United Nations today interpreted a statement by the United Arab Republic to mean that although Syria has merged with Egypt, the Syrian-Israel armistice commission will continue to function as a separate body as will the Egyptian-Israel armistice commission. This interpretation was based on the fact that the statement stresses that international agreements concluded by Egypt or Syria will remain valid within the ‘regional limits” prescribed within them.
The statement was submitted this week-end to United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold.
