Field Marshal Sir William Slim, Governor General of Australia, paid high tribute here last night to the role of Jews in the development of this country. He spoke at a dinner in his honor tendered by the local Jewish community. Three hundred guests attended.

Sir William noted that Middle East events have shown that in addition to their qualities in the arts, music, science and commerce, the Jews have not lost their martial spirit. He pointed out that in Australia Jews had also contributed to the military arts, singling out the late World War I hero of Australia, Sir John Monash, who was the first commander of the Australian corps which fought in France in that war.
