Jews from all parts of Poland and from 16 other nations paid honor yesterday to the memory of the Jews killed in battle in the revolt against crack Nazi infantry and Panzer units, Warsaw radio reported.
The ceremonies in the Polish capital, marking the 15th anniversary of the ghetto uprising, began with the formal renaming of a street in honor of Jozef Lewartowski, one of the leaders of the resistance. Later, 15,000 Jews marched to the marble monument in the ghetto area which was erected in memory of the Jewish heroes. They laid banks and banks of flowers on all sides of the monument.
Other wreaths were laid earlier in the day at a building which was once the Gestapo headquarters in Warsaw and the basement of which has been converted into a museum of the Hitler occupation. Prayers were recited at this site and before the memorial in the still shell pockmarked and razed ghetto district. Other ceremonies are scheduled here today and at the site of the Treblinka death camp tomorrow.
