Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and Mrs. Dulles were guests of honor at a dinner tendered by Ambassador and Mrs. Abba Eban as a climax of the week of celebration here marking Israel’s tenth anniversary.
Attending the Eban dinner also were leaders in diplomacy, Congress, labor, journalism and industry. They included French Ambassador Herve Alphand, Australian Ambassador Howard Beale, Senate Republican Leader William F. Knowland, Senator Stuart Symington, Missouri Democrat; also, labor leader George Meany, Jewish leader Jacob Blaustein and others.
Ambassador Eban issued a statement here declaring that the resolutions adopted last week by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States are “a rare and moving expression” of international friendship. “They recall the traditional interest of the Congress in the establishment of a Jewish homeland ever since the Concurrent Resolution of 1922,” Mr. Eban said. “Ever since the emergence of Israel as a free, sovereign democratic nation, she has been constantly reinforced in strength and spirit by the friendship of the Congress of the United States as well as of successive administrations,” he stated.
An informal tabulation showed that as of today a total of 14 Senators and 70 members of the House went on record in Congress in official expressions of congratulations to Israel on its tenth anniversary.
