An overflow audience, in excess of 22, 000, poured into Chicago Stadium tonight to hear former Senator Herbert H. Lehman pay tribute to the State of Israel on its tenth anniversary. Sen. Lehman called on the Western world to challenge the Soviet bid for supremacy in the Middle East by openly embracing Israel as a friend of democracy and by instituting a massive program of aid and education among the peoples of the region.

Speaking in place of former President Harry S. Truman who was originally scheduled to address the rally–Mr. Truman was ordered by his physician to cut down on his travel plan–Sen. Lehman warned the Great Powers against “sacrificing Israel, or some part of Israel, ” in order to win temporary advantage in the East-West contest for the support of the Arab regimes. “I hope our own government understands–and conveys to all other governments–that this notion is not only immoral, but impossible, ” he declared.
