Prof. Rabi Irving Engel Receive Honorary Degrees at H.U.C.

Dr. Isidor I. Rabi, Nobel prize winning atomic scientist, and Irving M. Engel, president of the American Jewish Committee, were the recipients here today of honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees at the 74th commencement of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, America’s seminary of Reform Judaism.

Twenty students who completed studies for the rabbinate at the College-Institute were ordained as rabbis at today’s ceremonies. Dr. Nelson Glueck president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and biblical archaeologist, conferred the degrees.

Dr. Rabi, Higgins Professor of Physics at Columbia University and holder of the Medal for Merit, was honored as an “eminent scientist who has worked to broaden the horizon of man and to advance civilization.” Mr. Engel was saluted as an “unflagging champion of the public good; learned and forceful exponent of liberal principles of government.”
