The Jewish Theatre for Children, sponsors of the Golden Pen Playwriting Contest, announced today that the 1957 prize of $1,000, offered annually for the best full-length play for children, written in English on a Jewish theme, will be divided this year between Shirley Gorson Milgrim, of Philadelphia, for her play “The Tender Champion,” and Robert Friend and David Shahar, of Jerusalem, authors of “The King’s Page.”
The awards were made at a ceremony at the Herzl Institute here. Aviad Yafeh, director of the Israel Office of Information, accepted the prize on behalf of Robert Friend and David Shahar, Mrs. Milgrim accepted her award in person. A total of 26 plays were submitted to the contest from the U.S.A. and foreign countries.
The Jewish Theatre for Children is financially supported by grants from Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, the Jewish Education Committee of New York and membership fees of the children in more than 700 Jewish and secular schools in New York.
