Secretary of State Dulles was hailed today by American Zionists for the stand taken by him on the “grave threat against Lebanon and its independence,” in a statement by Dr. Emanuel Neumann, president of the Zionist Organization of America, presented to the national Zionist executive council, the ruling body of that organization, at an all-day session held today in the Carnegie Endowment Building for International Peace.
In praising the Secretary’s action, the statement said: “We have had occasion in the past to criticize our State Department for errors of judgment and mistaken policies with regard to the Middle East. In pledging fullest American support for the Lebanese Republic, now fighting for its life against aggression and subversion by the Nasser dictatorship and its agents, Secretary Dulles reflected awareness that the crisis in Lebanon is also a serious crisis for the United States and all Western allies.”
Dr. Neumann announced that President Ben Zvi of Israel has been selected by the officers of the ZOA as the first recipient of the Theodor Herzl Award named for the late founder of Zionism which is to be awarded annually for outstanding service to the cause of Zionism and Israel. A resolution for the establishment of the Award was unanimously adopted by the meeting.
