Dr. Nahum Goldmann, world Jewish leader, said today that current developments in the Middle East may lead to stabilization in that area, in as much as Russia has been made to realize that the Western Powers have decided to defend their interests there. He called for a guarantee by the Soviet and Western blocs of existing Middle East frontiers and for an arms embargo.
Dr. Goldmann spoke at a press conference preceding the opening tomorrow of the World Jewish Congress five-day parley here which is to be attended by 90 delegates from 60 countries. The major problems which will be discussed at the parley, he announced, will include: 1. Consolidation of Jewish community life in the Soviet Union; 2. The right of North African Jews to emigrate to Israel; 3. Development of a cultural and educational offensive against Jewish assimilation.
Dr. Goldmann stressed that although anti-Semitism still exists in various countries, it does not enjoy official support anywhere. He said that Israel must be considered the spiritual center of world Jewry and the ultimate destination for East European Jewry.
