The timely arrival of police units today saved a handful of Israeli Communists from a bad beating by a large angry crowd of Israelis near the Parliament building.
The Communists were distributing leaflets attacking Anglo-American “aggression” in the Middle East and criticizing the flights of British planes and troops over Israel to Jordan. Some of the passers-by attempted to seize the throw-aways and a scuffle developed, with only the police preventing more serious trouble.
Premier David Ben Gurion met again today with British Ambassador Sir Franc is Rundall, presumably about Israel’s request that the British end their over-flights. It is understood that British reinforcements are currently being flown to Jordan by a circuitous route–Cyprus to Libya to Aden to Jordan.
The Israel public is becoming incensed over the continuing anti-Israel demonstrations of King Jordan of Hussein, whom they believe Israel befriended by allowing British troops to be flown there when he was threatened by a coup. Hussein has made new and bitter anti-Israel speeches and, for the first time in years, Jordanians are being put on trial for listening to Israeli radio broadcasts.
