Israel today requested “an urgent” meeting of the Security Council to consider “a grave act of aggression” committed yesterday when Syrian armed forces fired their heavy guns against Israeli settlements in the Huleh area.
The request for a Council meeting–the first of its kind by Israel since 1954–was made in a letter from Israel’s delegation chairman, Abba Eban, to Gunnar Jarring of Sweden, this month’s chairman of the Security Council.
According to the Eban letter, a heavy Syrian artillery barrage was opened against the villages of Hulata, Gonen, Shamair, Noterah, Dardara, Gadot and Maaleh Habashan. As a result of the barrage, the complaint adds, one Israeli shepherd was killed, three persons were injured and severe damage was caused to property. Mr. Eban’s letter links yesterday’s incident with others which have occurred recently along the border, including the murder several weeks ago of Mrs. Joyce Mary Doran, wife of a British air attache in Israel.
“These attacks,” said the Israeli letter, “have now developed a character which threatens peace and security and constitutes a serious breach of the United Nations Charter and and the Israel-Syrian general armistice agreement. The Government of Israel accordingly turns to the Security Council to bring about an immediate end to these aggressions.”
