The South African Jewish Board of Deputies and the South African Zionist Federation sent messages of condolence today to the family of former Premier Daniel F. Malan, who died Saturday.
When Dr. Malan came to power at the head of a Nationalist Party upsurge, he promised a delegation from the Board of Deputies that his government would treat Jews with complete equality. It and all subsequent Nationalist governments have kept that pledge.
Dr. Malan’s government, headed by a Nationalist party which during World War II had shown many evidences of Nazi sympathy, converted the de facto recognition of Israel extended by the Smuts government into de jure recognition.
