The prospect of higher rates for Israel’s taxpayers to help finance the absorption of the anticipated mass immigration this year was indicated last night by Finance Minister Levi Eshkol.

He said that a 200, 000, 000 pound supplementary budget for that purpose, augmenting the current 1, 336, 000, 000 pound draft budget for the next fiscal year, will be presented to the Knesset after the first reading of the draft.

About half of the supplementary budget, he stated, would have to come from taxpayers in the form of a special immigration levy and higher rates in taxes and excises. He said many millions of dollars were also expected from world Jewry. Debate on the regular budget has already started but the fact that the supplementary budget has not yet been included makes the debate somewhat academic, it was pointed out.
