Arriving here from Buenos Aires on a Uruguayan military plane to the thundering tune of a 21-gun salute, Israel’s Foreign Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, today began a six-day visit as the official guest of the Uruguayan Government.
Mrs. Meir was greeted at the airport by Uruguayan Foreign Minister Homero Martine Montero, Air Force Inspector General Colonel Saez, several members of Parliament, and a crowd estimated at over 2,000. Following the official state greeting, Mrs. Meir reviewed a guard of honor, while a military band played both the Uruguayan and Israeli national anthems.
Later, on being presented to the President of the National Governing Council, Dr. Martin Echegoyen, Mrs. Meir declared: “Uruguay is one of the great fighters for our cause and, as such, is a faithful friend. The Uruguayan people have a deep feeling for justice, and accompany us in our pursuit of great ideals.” In reply, Dr. Echegoyen expressed his gratitude for Mrs. Meir’s remarks, and told her that “Israel is very close to our hearts.”
Before leaving Argentina, where she spent a week, Mrs. Meir had lunch with Argentine President and Mrs. Arturo Frondizi; conferred with Dr. Alfredo Orgaz, chief justice of the Argentine Supreme Court; and dined with leading members of the Argentine Parliament.
