Israel’s capacity to receive new immigrants on a large scale will depend on the expansion of her economic structure, according to Brigadier-General Ezer Weizmann, commander of Israel’s air force, who arrived here this week-end to speak in several major cities for the Israel Bond campaign. “The relative quiet which prevails on our borders offers an excellent opportunity for completing the job of economically integrating the large influx of recent years and of paving the way through the establishment of new agricultural and industrial enterprises for the absorption of additional large numbers of newcomers within the next five years, ” General Weizmann said. “For this reason, we in Israel hope to enlist the active participation of many Americans in the State of Israel Bond drive as a means of providing the investment resources for an expanded development program, “
Maurice Bourges-Maunoury, former Premier of France, and an outstanding exponent of French-Israeli friendship, arrived yesterday for a speaking tour of key cities in the United States and Canada in behalf of the Israel Bond drive. A hero of the French underground during World War II, M. Bourges-Maunoury was Premier of France in 1957. He was Minister of Defense in the government of Guy Mollet in 1956 when France and Britain moved their troops to the Suez area at the time of Israel’s Sinai campaign.
“The policies of France and Israel are closely connected, ” M. Bourges-Maunoury said. “That this will continue to be so is guaranteed by public opinion in both countries. The citizens of both France and Israel understand the importance of this close relationship between them. “
