The head of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, who is also the chairman of the Illinois Committee for Equal Job Opportunities, along with a Methodist Bishop and the Turkish Consul General, live in a luxury Shore cooperative apartment house which has not welcomed Jewish residents for at least 15 years, the Chicago Jewish Sentinel reports in its current issue.
The paper quoted the president of the cooperative, at 1120 N. Lake Shore Drive, as declaring that he “doesn’t know” that his building is restricted, but it added that “long term residents confirmed that only non-Jews have been permitted to live in the building for at least 15 years. “
The paper reported that “residents include Methodist Bishop Charles W. Brashares of Illinois and Attorney Augustine J. Bowe, a vice president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, past president of the Chicago Bar Association, and chairman of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations and of the Illinois Committee for Equal Job Opportunities. “
