A Soviet broadcast in Arabic today warned the United Arab Republic against efforts to end its dependence on Soviet military aid. The broad-cast said that such efforts could expose the UAR to “a defeat at the hands of Israel.”

Citing a report that “certain quarters in Cairo were trying to obtain military aid from the West,” the Moscow radio said that military experts know that a changeover from one type of arms to another “incapacitates an army from fighting for a certain period.” The broadcast speaker added, “I wonder if Israeli strategists have such an eventuality in mind.”

London newspapers have reported that the Soviet Union had recently showed “signs of anxiety” at the “apparent determination of the United Arab Republic to free itself from the embraces of its Communist allies.
