France Assures Israel on Friendship; Dismisses the ‘renault Affair’

Maurice Couve de Murville, French Foreign Minister, reiterated in a letter to Israel Foreign Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, made public here today that the Renault cancellation of Israel operations did not reflect any change in the strong Franco-Israel friendship ties.

Observers here felt that both Israel and France intended to consider the issue as politically closed. From the standpoint of economics, however, the question was still considered open. The Kaiser-Frazer company at Haifa was still reportedly threatening a $2, 000, 000 damage suit against Renault.
