Gershon Avner Named Israel’s Ambassador to Canada; Succeeds Lourie

Gershon Avner, head of the United States Division of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, was named today as Israel Ambassador to Ottawa, succeeding Arthur Lourie who becomes Ambassador to London.

Mr. Avner, 40, was educated at Exeter and Oxford University and had foreign service assignments in Europe. He was counsellor of the Embassy in London before being assigned to the American desk.

Arthur Liveran, counsellor of the Embassy in London, has been appointed head of the Foreign Ministry’s British Commonwealth Division. He is presently in New York, serving as chairman of a special United Nations committee surveying UN pension questions. He will be succeeded in London by Gideon Shomron, first secretary of the Embassy in Moscow.
