Former Minister of Labor Mordecai Namir, a member of Premier David Ben-Gurion’s Mapai party, was elected Mayor of Tel Aviv yesterday.

Namir was able to capture the seat, long held by the General Zionists, by a coalition in the Municipal Council that left the General Zionists and the right-wing Herut Party in the opposition. His election was aided by members of the National Religious and Agudist parties.

The election of the new Jerusalem Mayor is scheduled for tomorrow night. Mordechai Ish-Shalom, of Mapai, seems assured of election since the coalition supporting him has eleven of the Council’s 21 seats.
