The executive committee of the American Jewish Congress today adopted a resolution calling upon the World Bank “to suspend further consideration of the proposed loan until the UAR has demonstrated a willingness to abide by the terms of treaty obligations it has freely assumed and to respect the declarations of the United Nations.
“Until the UAR shows convincingly such willingness to respect international commitments and to preserve the peace by abandoning its illegal blockade of Israeli shipping and cargo, it is the moral obligation of United Nations agencies to refrain from any financial undertaking that would promote the belligerent aims of the United Arab Republic,” the resolution stressed.
The resolution was adopted after AJC president Joachim Prinz, in an address to the meeting, termed as “misleading” suggestions by Secretary of State Christian Herter that the proposed loan had only “economic implications” and was divorced from all political considerations.
