The International Wine Growers Association announced here that Israel-produced wines will no longer be identified by use of the general continental descriptions usually linked with geographical locations.
Israel champagne will henceforth be labeled “Sassonia,” from the Hebrew word for “bubbly.” Israel port will be called “Partom,” the name of a wine mentioned in the Booms of Esther and Danial and in Jewish religious lore. Sauternes will be known as “Lavan Atik,” and sherry will be called “Shariar,” a word of Aramaic origin, A rich red wine known as Pommard will hereafter be listed as “Nimrod.”
