Four Jews were seriously injured by the explosion of a grenade, presumably thrown by Algerian nationalists into a throng on a main street of Constantine. It was not believed there was any specific anti-Jewish motive in the attack.
The Algerian Government’s decision to ban the extreme right-wing, anti-Semitic movement, Jene Nation, was welcomed by the Jewish community. The organization, whose main activity in metropolitan France has been to carry on anti-Jewish propaganda, was considered responsible for some of the swastika daubings here on the city walls during the recent anti-Semitic manifestations.
