Former President Harry S. Truman was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America last night for “untiring efforts to bring about better understanding and increased affection among men across all barriers of background and belief,”
Mr. Truman later was the principal speaker at the National Community Award dinner of the Seminary which was held in honor of eight Jewish community leaders. Each received a bronze plaque for dedication to “the high principles of Judaism and for exemplary leadership in his endeavors to enrich the Jewish life of his community.”
The recipients were James J. Axelrod of Boston, Morris DeWosin of Chicago, Abraham S. Kay of Washington, D. C., Myer B. Marcus of Philadelphia, Irving S. Norry of Rochester, N. Y., J. Irving Oelbaum of Toronto, Robert Schear of Dayton, Ohio, and Dr. Harold M. Weinberg of New York City.
Mr. Truman paid tribute to Prof. Shaiom Spiegel of the Seminary faculty for “one of the best lectures I have ever heard”–a talk on the Book of Amos. Mr. Truman said the lecture demonstrated that Justice was “innate in all men, transcending law and similar transitory considerations.”
