Jewish Centers Affiliated with J. W.b. Spent $22,407,000 Last Year

Local community expenditures by the 334 Jewish centers affiliated with the National Jewish Welfare Board totaled $22,407,000 during 1959, it was reported today by the JWB on the eve of the opening of the organization’s biennial convention.

The aggregate membership of the 334 centers in 1959 was 621,000 men, women and children. Cost of new Center construction underway during 1959 totaled $8,700,000 and costs of new Center buildings finished in 1959 totaled $5,500,000. A total of 209 day camps were conducted by the Centers last year and 118 country camps were conducted by centers and other Jewish community agencies in 1959.

In a message to the JWB convention, President Eisenhower said that the members of the JWB “have long provided many generous services to our military and veterans. Through your various opportunities for constructive use of leisure time, you are making a significant contribution to our national welfare.”

A total of 329 full and part-time Jewish military chaplains participated last year in the JWB Armed Services Division program for Jewish servicemen and veterans.
