339 New Synagogues Opened in Israel During Year; Some for Youths

A total of 339 synagogues have been established in Israel during the past year, Rabbi Yaacov Toledam. Minister for Religious Affairs, reported here today. The report said that 21 of the new houses of worship were special youth synagogues.

Israel’s Christian population totals 52,000 of whom about 1,000 are clerics. Rabbi-Toledano reported. There were some 200 Christian churches throughout the country. During the year, the Ministry maintained 80 mosques and paid the salaries of 190 Moslem religious functionaries. This year’s budget provides for the establishment in Jaffa of a Moslem religious library.
