Senator Clifford P. Case, New Jersey Republican, today urged Secretary of State Christian A. Herter to make an attempt to establish contact for negotiations between Israel and the Arab states.

In a letter to Mr. Herter, Senator Case pointed out that leading Arab and Israeli diplomats are now attending the United Nations General Assembly session, and that it might be timely for the UN or a third party to seek a start of negotiations.

Senator Case said that “in the absence of any willingness even to sit down with Israeli representatives, the candidacy of the United Arab Republic for a seat on the Security Council is viewed with grave concern.” He said it was “clear that a realistic acceptance of the fact of Israel’s existence, and the establishment of direct negotiations among the states concerned, could contribute greatly, not only to their own real interests, but also to the cause of world peace.”
