The 200th anniversary of the Board of Deputies of British Jews was formally observed here at a meeting of the Board today, marked with special thanksgiving prayers prepared for the occasion, voiced by Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie and Haham Dr. Solomon Gaon, chief Sephardic rabbi here. The Board came into being in 1760, at the time of the accession of King George III, as a joint committee of the Ashkenazic and Sephardic communities here.
Barnett Janner, member of Parliament and president of the Board, delivered a special address in which he said: “We have joined in prayers to the Almighty, for the will to help our fellow men which He has inspired in us and in our predecessors.” He expressed thanks “for the privilege of living in a land with fellow-citizens who believe so earnestly that right and Justice will ultimately prevail.”
Mr. Janner, reviewing the Board’s interest in Jews in various countries, revealed that a Soviet Georgian editor of a Communist newspaper, who had been fired after printing a “blood libel” against Jews in his area, has “actually been re-appointed to another post,” by the Soviet authorities.
