Israel’s Cabinet will hold a special session here tomorrow, in an effort to help Education Minister Abba Eban to avert a threatened strike by high school teachers in Israel.
Mr. Eban was continuing today his negotiations with the union representing the teachers, who are demanding higher salaries. He is scheduled to report on his negotiations to the full Cabinet tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the complicated Rabbinical Council issue remained still unsolved, by the Cabinet. Yesterday’s Cabinet session discussed that issue and decided to await a further report on the matter from Pinhas Rosen, Minister of Justice.
The mandate of Israel’s Rabbinical High Court expired last October 21. While the court has been sitting since then, there are doubts whether its actions have any legal validity. Elections for the posts of Ashkenazi and Sephardi chief rabbis had originally been scheduled for October 21. But the eight-man board that should have nominated candidates for the chief rabbinate could not muster the legal quorum of five, after four appointees to that board had resigned.
