Interior Minister Muharrem I. Kiziloglu told a Jewish communal delegation today in Ankara that their request for the continuation of the previous status of the Jewish communal councils would be examined. The delegation made the request after a recent law ordered the decentralization of the activities of synagogues and other institutions which had been operated by the councils. Other religions were also affected by the same law.
Another communal delegation, meanwhile, conferred with Istanbul Governor Refik Tulka, to request that the Turkish Government grant authorization for the election of a new Chief Rabbi. The post has been vacant since the death last month of Chief Rabbi Saban. When permission is granted, representatives of various Jewish religious and lay institutions will meet to elect the new Chief Rabbi.
