Jewish Woman Honored for Offering $500, 000 to Aid Integration

The United Synagogue of America today presented a Solomon Schechter citation for distinguished service in social action to Miss Ellen Steinbexg of New York City and St. Louis, Mo. Miss Steinberg was honored for her recent offer of a gift or loan of $500, 000 to the school board of New Orleans, La. during the recent integration crisis there.

The award was presented by Dr. Louis Finkelstein, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, who said: “Miss Steinberg’s magnificent gesture has shed luster on all of us as Jews and as Americans because it exemplifies Judaism in action and the translation of ideal into concrete commitment.”
