The continued use by Italian officials of documentary forms still requiring identification by race was raised in the Italian Senate today and brought out Government assurances that efforts were being made to control the practice.
The complaint was made by Senator Banfi, a Socialist. He charged that the Mayor of Millesimo, in violation of a decree of 1944 invalidating Fascist racial requirements, had issued a certificate to a Jewish citizen in which the bearer was identified as “belonging to the Jewish race.” The Undersecretary of the Interior said in his reply that his case had been turned over to the public prosecutor for action.
The Union of Italian Jewish Communities has protested on a number of occasions that Italian officials had failed to enforce a 1944 decree abrogating all regulations promulgated during the Fascist regime which called for the specifying of racial identity on official forms.
