Morocco officially renounced today the 1928 convention with the Alliance Israelite Universelle. An edict published today in the Official Gazette, which bears the seal of the late King Mohammed V, formally “integrated” the Alliance schools into the national educational network.

The act regularizes an “integration process” which has existed for nearly one year. It is understood that the Alliance and the Moroccan Government have already reached a new agreement dealing with the organization’s activities in the country, and it is expected that an official edict will soon formalize this situation.

Last September, one-third of the Alliance schools were integrated and today’s edict indicates that the authorities intend to continue in this direction. The Alliance has in Morocco some 30 schools with an enrollment of 30, 000 pupils. Moroccan Jewry depends, to a large extent, on the Alliance network for its educational needs.
