Two gifts totaling $2, 000, 000 were announced here last night to mark the 70th birthday of Samuel Bronfman, president of the Canadian Jewish Congress and chairman of the North American section of the World Jewish Congress. One gift of $1, 000, 000 is a grant by Mr. Bronfman’s children to establish a Samuel Bronfman Archaeological and Biblical Museum in Israel. The second is a gift of $1, 000, 000 by the Samuel Bronfman Foundation for studies to advance business and industrial development in Canada.
A national tribute was tendered to Mr. Bronfman at a dinner here on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Jewish Congress, made a special trip to Montreal for the occasion and lauded Mr. Bronfman’s leadership in the WJC for world Jewry. Israel Ambassador to Canada, Yaacov Herzog, spoke on behalf of the Israel Government and made a presentation to Mr. Bronfman on behalf of his government. Another leading speaker was Prof. Rene Cassin of Paris, president of the Alliance Israelite Universelle.
More than 400 community leaders from many cities in Canada and from the United States attended the dinner at which a congratulatory cable was read from Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion and from Jean Lesage, Premier of Quebec. Editorials greeting Mr. Bronfman appeared in the leading Montreal newspapers, the Montreal Gazette and the Montreal Daily Star.
