Several acts of anti-Jewish terrorism were reported today from various parts of Algeria. At the same time, French authorities denied officially rumors that a Jewish school teacher, under arrest for possession of a plastic bomb, had been tortured to death.
At Oran, a Jewish policeman, Roger Bittoun, was attacked by an armed terrorist whose gun fortunately jammed. Bittoun fought off the gunman who, however, managed to escape. At the same time, a bomb was thrown into a store owned by another Jew in Oran, Maurice Atlani. It was the second time that this store was damaged by bombing. In the small town of Rivet, south of Algiers, two Jewish workmen were among several persons injured when a hand grenade was lobbed into a restaurant.
The denial concerning the alleged death of the Jewish school teacher was announced in all newspapers and on the radio today. The man is M. Ghnassia and others arrested with him “are all in normal health.”
