Four cash awards for the best Jewish books published in 1960 in fiction, poetry and the juvenile field were made here last night at the annual meeting of the Jewish Book Council of the National Jewish Welfare Board.
Edward L. Wallant, of Norwalk, Connecticut, received the $250 Harry and Ethel Daroff Memorial fiction award for his novel, “The Human Season. ” The Harry and Florence Kovner Memorial poetry awards, of $100 each, went to Dr. Ephraim E. Lisitzky, of New Orleans, for his volume of Hebrew poetry, “K’mo Hayom Rad” (As the Day Wanes), published in Tel Aviv; and to Joseph Rubinstein, of New York, for his Yiddish work, “Megillath Russland. ” Regina Tor, of Poughkeepsie, New York, won the Isaac Siegel Memorial award of $250 for 1960’s best Jewish juvenile work in English published in the United States, entitled “Discovering Israel.”
In addition to the individual awards, the Council voted citations to six libraries meeting stated criteria for Jewish libraries. The citations were given to the libraries of Temple Emanu-El, Birmingham, Ala. ; Temple Mishkan Tefila, Chestnut Hill, Mass. ; the Hillel Library at the University of California at Los Angeles; the Wood Library of Beth David Congregation, Philadelphia; the Falk Memorial Library of Temple Sinai, Pittsburgh; and Congregation Beth Israel, Camden, N.J.
