Jacob S. Potofsky, general president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, tonight received the eighth annual Human Rights Award of the Joint Defense Appeal, the fund-raising arm of the American Jewish Committee and the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. Lewis S. Rosenstiel, prominent industrialist, was guest of honor at a dinner at which the presentation of the award was made. A campaign to raise $6,100,000 for the JDA was launched at the dinner.
Mr. Potofsky was cited for his “half century of leadership in the fight to eradicate bigotry and to promote democratic unionism in this country and abroad. ” Previous recipients of the award include former President Harry S. Truman, Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, John J. McCloy, Edward R. Murrow, and Paul G. Hoffman. Mr. Rosenstiel was cited for his “distinguished leadership and statesmanlike endeavors on behalf of all causes which seek human betterment, dignity and security for all peoples without regard to race or creed.”
