Another bitter exchange between Israel and one of the Arab delegations took place here today, when Ambassador Arieh Eshel; Israel’s deputy permanent representative and his country’s representative in the General Assembly’s Special Political Committee, clashed with Lebanon’s Ambassador to Washington, Nadin Dimechkie.
The committee is currently discussing the South African Apartheid issue, but this is the same group before which, later this month or early in December, the Arab refugee debate is scheduled to develop.
Speaking in condemnation of South Africa’s discriminatory practices, Mr. Dimechkie told the committee that Israel, too, practices discriminations, allegedly directing its policies against the Israeli Arabs “in subtle and disguised” fashion.
Replying to Mr. Dimechkie, Ambassador Eshel told the committee that the Lebanese attack is “an additional illustration of the obsession of certain delegates in relation to Israel.” The Lebanese attack, Mr. Eshel continued, “belongs to the category of falsehood and distortion,” and is “one of the methods of the Arab League countries in their warfare against Israel.”
