The 1,200 -member Jewish community of Ecuador has devised plans to fly children from one town that has no Jewish educational facilities to another which does, for three months of intensive Jewish education, a leader of the community revealed here today.
Herbert Gedalius, president of the Association de Beneficia Israelite, said Ecuador Jews live in Quito, which has Jewish educational facilities, and in Guayaquil, which does not. The two cities are 300 miles apart. He said the plan is to fly the 12 Jewish children in Guayaquil to Quito for the three summer months. He added that a number of Jewish families in Quito had indicated they would accommodate the children during their stay.
Mr. Gedalius came to the United States to confer with officials of the World Jewish Congress, of which the Beneficial is an affiliate. Current arrangements, he said, have provided for the teacher, who came to Ecuador from Israel, to travel from Quito to Guayaquil for two or three days each month.
