Special services last night atop Mount Zion marked the anniversary of October 1943–honoring the King of Denmark and the Danish people for their rescue of the Jews of Denmark, when the latter were threatened by the Nazis with deportation to death camps.
Under the leadership of their King, the people of Denmark undertook a vast rescue operation in October 1943, after Danish authorities learned that the German army was planning to start deporting Jews. By night, Danes mobilized fleets of ships and boats, and ferried the Jews to neutral Sweden. Nearly the entire Jewish population of Denmark was saved through this dramatic operation.
