Senator-Jacob Javits of New York, in a speech today on the Senate floor, called Israel’s trial of Adolf Eichmann “one of the most historic events of our time” and predicted “it will be studied for many decades as a landmark in the efforts of mankind to bring about a rule of law to replace a rule of force as the final arbiter of our destiny.”

Senator Javits said the “major significance” of the trial is that it established the fact that “the individual is entirely responsible for his acts with respect to the laws of humanity” and that “he cannot escape his personal responsibility for violations of the laws of humanity by incriminating others, by claiming superior orders or by pleading fear.” The Republican lawmaker commended Israel for conducting the trial with “Justice” which, he said, is what the “world had a right to expect from Israel.”
