A bequest involving a house donated in a will to the Anglican Church was rejected here by the Church Wardens today because the legacy provided that the house must be used only as “a home for Gentile ladies.”
The wardens ruled that such a provision is “discriminatory and contrary to public policy” as well as a violation of the Fair Accommodations Practices Act of the Province of Ontario. The house is located at Bowmanville, Ontario. According to the wardens, the wording of the legacy would have established a home “for ladies of every race, whether white or colored, except those of the Jewish race.”
