A bill before the New York State Legislature for humane slaughter was opposed yesterday by the Jewish Community Council of Albany as a “serious threat to religious liberty.”
Ed Philips, executive director, said the measure, which exempts shechita, Jewish ritual slaughter, would make such slaughter impossible. He referred to a section of the bill, introduced by Sen. William T. Conklin of Brooklyn and Assemblyman Anthony P. Savarese Jr. of Queens, both Republicans, which forbids shackling and hoisting of food animals before slaughter.
