$1,644,714 Raised at Opening of Jewish Welfare Drive in Los Angeles

A total of $1, 644,714 was pledged here yesterday for this year’s United Jewish Welfare Fund campaign, according to an announcement today by Joseph N. Mitchell, general campaign chairman, and Mrs. Victor M. Carter, chairman of the women’s division. The fund will seek to raise $8, 000, 000 this year.

At a special gifts dinner last night, 150 Jewish community leaders here raised $1, 443, 600, as against $906, 852 pledged at a similar event in last year’s drive. An additional $201,144 was raised at the Women’s Division’s annual “pace setter’s” luncheon yesterday. Moshe Sharett, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, and Israel’s former Prime Minister, was the principal speaker at the dinner.
