Leaders in all walks of Jewish life, as well as Mayor Robert F. Wagner of New York, today attended the funeral of Alexander Kahn, noted American Jewish leader and former general manager of the Jewish Daily Forward, who died last Monday at the age of 80. He was buried in Mt. Carmel cemetery of the Workmen’s Circle, largest Jewish fraternal organization in this country.
Mayor Wagner, eulogizing the Jewish leader at the funeral ceremonies in Park West Memorial Chapel, stressed his services not only to the city but also the United States, President Kennedy had similarly emphasized Mr. Kahn’s services to the U.S. in a message sent to him on his last birthday.
Other speakers who eulogized Mr. Kahn at today’s funeral ceremonies included Adolph Held, chairman of the Jewish Labor Committee; State Supreme Court Justice Matthew Levy; Federal Judge Paul Hays; Dr. L. Fogelman, acting editor of the Jewish Daily Forward; Moses A. Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee; Dr. Joseph Schwartz, executive vice-president of the Israel Bond Organization; Nathan Chanin, leader of the Workmen’s Circle; and Alexander Rose, president of the Liberal Party, of which Mr. Kahn was a founder and vice-president.
